In the course of the ATP-500 tournament in Washington, two great sportsmen from Great Britain met. Wayne Rooney and Andy Murray played both football and tennis at the Citi Open.
“It’s nice to finally meet him,” Murray said enthusiastically, “I’ve never met him before, that’s very cool. He is, of course, one of the best players in the history of England.”
Rooney, a record scorer at both Manchester United and England, joined DC United in MLS a few weeks ago.
“It was an incredible achievement because Djokovic seemed unbeatable,” Rooney recalled of the 2013 Wimbledon Final. The 32-year-old was a live spectator on the Center Court.
“This was my first time in Wimbledon, and history was made, this was a fantastic moment.” Murray was the first Briton to win the tournament on Church Road again in 77 years.
Together with brother Jamie Murray and his double partner Bruno Soares, Rooney first played a double in football tennis before Andy Murray served a few serves on Rooney.
“It was quite useful. The forehand looked good, he almost returned a few serves,” Murray said, but added with a wink that “the backhand needed a little work.
Murray will meet the American Mackenzie McDonald in the first round in Washington and could face compatriot Kyle Edmund in round two.
