ATP: Dominic Thiem has to cancel double bet because of shoulder injury

Dominic Thiem had to cancel his double entry at the Generali Open in Kitzbühel due to tendon irritation in his right shoulder. The Austrian French Open finalist surprisingly failed in his opening match on Wednesday due to qualifier Martin Klizan (Slovakia).

In the quarter-finals Thiem and his Davis Cup buddy Dennis Novak would have met the Austrian-German duo Jürgen Melzer/Philipp Petzschner today.

“The cancellation has nothing to do with yesterday’s individual match and is a precautionary measure. Dominic had his shoulder treated here and, according to the ATP physio, is now supposed to put the bat aside for two to three days,” said Thiem coach Günter Bresnik on Thursday.

After the match against Klizan, the top seeded Thiem was treated by the physiotherapist. A tendon irritation was diagnosed in the right shoulder of the world ranking report.

With a view to the following ATP Masters 1000 events in Toronto and Cincinnati, 24-year-old Thiem therefore had to withdraw from the doubles competition with a heavy heart. Bitter is the end of the likeable Austrian duo for the organizers of the Generali Open Kitzbühel, of course, but Thiems decision could “understand”, says tournament director Alexander Antonitsch.

He had never seen Thiem so disappointed. “Dominic would very much like to have played the double. In the end, however, he accepted the decision of ATP-Physios and Günter Bresnik, especially with regard to the upcoming tournaments. After all, it’s still about qualifying for the ATP final in London,” Antonisch said: “But that’s a pity for the tournament and for the fans.
