ATP: The “sixth” man: Rod Laver and John McEnroe reveal the secret in NYC

On Tuesday the secret of the “sixth” man will be revealed in New York: Team boss John McEnroe and Rod Laver will announce who will take last place in the “Team World” at the Laver Cup. The last spot in “Team Europe” is still open.

Tuesday morning, 9:15 a.m. local time, 383 Madison – in the heart of Manhattan. You don’t have to be a prophet to know that John McEnroe and Rod Laver have to leave their hotel relatively early so that the typically chaotic New York rush hour traffic won’t slow them down – and the renowned duo may arrive late at the Laver Cup’s Global Sponsor headquarters.

McEnroe and Laver, the two icons, will unveil the secret of who will take last place in Team World, which will play the defending champion Team Europe in Chicago from 21 to 23 September. So far Juan Martin del Potro (Argentina), Kevin Anderson (South Africa), John Isner (USA), Diego Schwartzman (Argentina) and Nick Kyrgios (Australia) have been appointed as members of the sextet.

Team Europe”, managed by McEnroe’s rival Björn Borg, currently consists of Alexander Zverev (Hamburg), Roger Federer (Switzerland), Novak Djokovic (Serbia), Grigor Dimitrov (Bulgaria) and David Goffin (Belgium). The last spot is scheduled for release in the next few days.

A nomination of Rafael Nadal, who was still in the “blue” winning team last year, is almost impossible. The record French Open champion wants to lead his Spanish Davis Cup team into the semi-final against hosts and defending champions France in Lille (14 to 16 September). Shortly after the US Open in New York (from August 27).

Here comes the 2nd edition of the Laver Cup for “Rafa”, a proven team player, this time rather inconvenient. Especially as it’s “away” in the United Center of Chicago against the team supervised by “Big Mac”.
