Australian Open: “Melbourne Arena”: Australian Open rename stadium

Tennis Australia has personally struck in this case!

The second largest station in Melbourne Park (after the Rod Laver Arena), the former Hisense Arena, will be called the Melbourne Arena from 2019. This is reported by the Sydney Morning Herald.

Craig Tiley, tournament director of the Australian Open and “boss” of Tennis Australia, explained that an “iconic” name had been sought for the station. “Tennis Australia bought the naming rights, so we could call it Melbourne Arena,” he said. They wanted the name of the city instead of a commercial one. The Australian Open contract with Melbourne Park runs until 2036 and Tiley hopes that the name “Melbourne Arena” will last for so long.

Whether the Margaret Court Arena will also be given a new name after the repeated homophobic statements of its namesake, as demanded by some actors – nothing was known about this. Some players had threatened a boycott this year if they had been set up there, but that did not happen in the end.
