US Open: Qualification, Day 1: Barthel, Lottner and Korpatsch continue, Lisicki and Schäfer out

Mona Barthel, Antonia Lottner and Tamara Korpatsch have survived the first round of qualification at the US Open. Sabine Lisicki, on the other hand, retired, as she did in Wimbledon, New York.

Barthel defeated the Czech Lucie Hradecka 7-5, 2-6, 6-1 and now meets the Spanish Silvia Soler-Espinosa. Antonia Lottner is also ahead after a 6:1, 6:1 over Viktoriya Tomova from Bulgaria. She will play Francesca di Lorenzo from the USA in round two.

Great news also from Tamara Korpatsch: She won against the Israeli Deniz Khazaniuk 4:6, 6:4, 6:3 and thus remains in the race in the fight for her first Grand Slam main field.

Sabine Lisicki lost to the former world rankings 35th Olga Govortsova from Belarus 4:6, 5:7 and after long injury problems it is the next bitter setback for Lisicki on the way back. In Wimbledon she also lost in two sets in the first qualifying round. Most recently, the former twelfth in the world rankings, which is currently only ranked 221 in the WTA ranking, was in a grand slam main field at the 2017 US Open. Lisicki won her last major tournament match in Wimbledon in 2016.

Anne Schäfer also retired. She lost against the Spanish Georgina Garcia Perez 3:6, 3:6.
