US Open: Qualification, Day 1: Dennis Novak fast in round two

Dennis Novak has opened the qualification for the US Open – and is in round two after a smooth two-set victory.

Novak won 6-1, 6-3 against the Frenchman Quentin Halys after just under an hour of play, making them the first player ever in the second qualifying round. There he will meet the winner of the match between Alexey Vatutin from Russia and Tom Fawcett from the USA.

The 24-year-old Bresnik protégé had qualified for the main field of a major for the first time at this year’s Australian Open and then sensationally qualified for the third round in Wimbledon.

Still in action today: Lucas Miedler – Thomas Fabbiano, Sebastian Ofner – Nino Serdarusic, Maximilian Neuchrist – Simone Bolelli (click here for the livescores!)

In the tableau are also: Jürgen Melzer – Kenny de Schepper as well as Gerald Melzer (20) – Darian King (in round two it could come to the brothers duel!).
