ATP: Daniil Medvedev triumphs at Winston-Salem

Daniil Medvedev wins the 250cc tournament in Winston-Salem. The Russian doesn’t give the American Steve Johnson a chance in the final.

For the 22-year-old, the triumph in North Carolina is the second tournament victory of his career. This year the Russian already won the event in Sydney.

Medvedev did not lose a single set in six games and crowned himself Roberto Bautista Agut’s successor. Johnson couldn’t even take the right-handed player’s serve throughout the match. For his part, the 57th of the world rankings managed two breaks. After just over 80 minutes of play, the 6:4 and 6:4 victory was certain.

With this victory, the Russian will improve by 21 positions to 36th place in the ATP ranking. Medvedev and Johnson will continue at the US Open on Monday. The American will meet Uzbek Denis Istomin in his opening game, while Medvedev will play his compatriot Evgeny Donskoy.
