US Open: Florian Mayer says goodbye after a strong fight in New York

Florian Mayer delivered a strong performance in his probably last match at the US Open: Mayer lost to Borna Coric, who was seeded at position 20, in four sets.

The long-time Davis Cup player Florian Mayer (34) has lost the last Grand Slam match of his career in four sets. The man from Bayreuth, once number 18 in the ranking, lost at the US Open against Borna Coric, 13 years younger, 2:6, 2:6, 7:5, 4:6. Mayer had announced early that he would end his career after the tournament in New York after 17 professional years.

After trailing 0:2 sets, Mayer fought his way back into the match before the eyes of long-term coach Tobias Summerer and had another chance of a comeback in the fourth round. In Coric, however, the German was drawn by lot by an opponent who did not let up. And who used his first match point after 2:26 hours.

On his farewell tour, Florian Mayer only clinched two victories at 15 starts on the ATP tour this season – each on his favourite turf in Halle/Westphalia and Stuttgart. Mayer’s best Grand Slam result was his entry into the quarter-finals of Wimbledon 2012, he won the tournaments in Bucharest (2011) and Halle (2016). At the US Open, reaching the third round (2011 and 2013) was his best result.

Up until the US Open, Mayer, who was notorious for his unusual backhanded game, had earned a total of $7,224,992 million in prize money, plus $54,000 in New York. On the ATP tour the Franke won 243 matches with 261 defeats.
