US Open: Mischa Zverev plays 2-0 set lead

Mischa Zverev retired in the first round of the US Open in New York, but the older of the two Zverev brothers already had the victory in mind. The 31-year-old lost to the eleven-year younger American Taylor Fritz after 3:48 hours 6:4, 6:2, 4:6, 6:7 (2:7), 2:6.

After leading 2-0 in the set, Zverev was one break ahead in the third, fourth and fifth sets. Last year he reached the last sixteen in Flushing Meadows.

Peter Gojowczyk (Munich) and Florian Mayer (Bayreuth) also retired before the left-hander from Hamburg. Altogether 15 Germans (9 men, 6 women) qualified for the US Open. Alexander Zverev (Hamburg/No. 4) and Wimbledon winner Angelique Kerber (Kiel/No. 4) will compete in their first round matches on Tuesday.
