US Open: Surprise: Jürgen Melzer plays at the US Open

After the cancellation of Alexander Peya, injured at the elbow, for the US Open Jürgen Melzer will now compete in New York with Peya’s Croatian partner Nikola Mektic. The 37-year-old from Lower Austria thus has a chance to collect important points for his future career.

Melzer will be less pleased about the draw: “Should Mektic/Melzer win against Peter Gojowczyk/Purav Raja (GER/IND), they will have a duel with the top seeders. Styrian Oliver Marach and Mate Pavic (CRO) lead the field, meeting Leonardo Mayer/Joao Sousa (ARG/POR) for the opening match.

Third Austrian in the men’s double competition of the last Grand Slam tournament of the year is Philipp Oswald. The Vorarlberger plays with standard partner Max Mirnyi (BLR) against Marcus Daniell/Wesley Koolhof (NZL/NED).

Here’s the whole draw to the men’s doubles.
