US Open: Jan-Lennard Struff moves into the second round

Davis Cup player Jan-Lennard Struff (28) is the first German player to enter the second round of the US Open men’s singles.

The world ranking-58th from Warstein prevailed against wildcard starter Tim Smyczek from the USA after 2:18 hours 7:6 (7:2), 6:4, 6:3 and celebrated his first victory in Flushing Meadows in four years.

On Wednesday Struff will meet Marco Cecchinato (Italy/No. 22) or Julien Benneteau (France). Mischa Zverev (Hamburg), Peter Gojowczyk (Munich) and Florian Mayer (Bayreuth) were eliminated at the start on Monday, a total of nine German players had qualified for the main draw of the US Open.
