US Open: Witthöft follows Görges and Maria and meets Serena Williams

Carina Witthöft (23) provided a perfect start for the German tennis players at the US Open in New York.

The world ranking 101st from Hamburg beat Caroline Dolehide (USA) 6:3, 7:6 (8:6) and won for the first time since Wimbledon 2017 a match at a Grand Slam tournament.

In round two Witthöft will face 23-time Major Winner Serena Williams (USA/No. 17) on Wednesday. The Wimbledon finalist won 6-4, 6-0 against Magda Linette of Poland at her comeback in Flushing Meadows – last year she missed Olympia because of her daughter’s birth – and 36-year-old Williams will play for her seventh title in New York.

Before Witthöft, world ranking ninth Julia Görges (Bad Oldesloe) and Tatjana Maria (Bad Saulgau) had already prevailed in their first round matches. On Tuesday there are three other German players in the first round: Wimbledon winner Angelique Kerber (Kiel/No. 4), Andrea Petkovic (Darmstadt) and Laura Siegemund (Metzingen).
