US Open: defending champion Sloane Stephens continues her fight

Defending champion Sloane Stephens has successfully fought her way out of the US Open and entered the third round in the afternoon heat of New York after 2:46 hours of play.

The 25-year-old American beat qualifier Anhelina Kalinina from Ukraine 4:6, 7:5, 6:2.

On Friday, Stephens will play two-time finalist Wiktoria Asarenka for a place in the round of 16. The former world number one from Belarus won her second match in Flushing Meadows 6-1, 6-2 against Daria Gavrilova (Australia).
