US Open: Federer starts confidently in New York

Grand Slam record champion Roger Federer has started into the US Open with a sovereign victory. The 37-year-old Swiss, who had triumphed five times in New York between 2004 and 2008, won 6-2, 6-2, 6-4 against Japanese Yoshihito Nishioka.

In the second round, world number two Federer will face Frenchman Benoit Paire on Thursday. Federer had major problems against the Frenchman in Halle/Westphalia in the middle of the year. At that time, the “Maestro” had to fend off two match points against Paire.

Paire wiedrum could not fully convince at his first appearance in New York. Dennis Novak, the Austrian qualifier, had a chance to win the set in each of the four rounds played against Paire, but could not use it.

In the first match of the night session, Federer left no doubt about who is the boss at Arthur Ashe Stadium. And then showed up at the ESPN studio with John McEnroe warned against his next opponent.
