US Open: Tatjana Maria without a chance against strong Elina Svitolina

Tatjana Maria (31) retired in the second round of the US Open. The world ranking-70th from Bad Saulgau lost to the favoured Elina Svitolina in New York in 68 minutes 2:6, 3:6 in the midday heat.

The seventh seeded Ukrainian paid back for her first-round defeat in Wimbledon.

Maria was one of four German players who had won their opening match in Flushing Meadows. On Wednesday, Julia Görges (No. 9) will also play Ekaterina Makarowa (Russia) and Carina Witthöft against 23-time Grand Slam winner Serena Williams (USA/No. 17).

Wimbledon winner Angelique Kerber (No. 4) will play Johanna Larsson from Sweden on Thursday.
