US Open: Murray loses in Grand Slam comeback, Wawrinka in round three

The Spaniard Fernando Verdasco (34) has finished the Grand Slam comeback of former world number one Andy Murray in the second round of the US Open. The 31st-seeded Verdasco won 7:5, 2:6, 6:4, 6:4 against the Briton who had had hip surgery at the beginning of the year.

Former tournament winner Murray (31) played his first major in 14 months in New York. Verdasco presented after the set equalization of the Scotsman in the third heat, Murray sniffed briefly at a comeback. Too little, however, to get back on track at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Stan Wawrinka from Switzerland, who had triumphed at his last appearance in Flushing Meadows two years ago, made it into the third round. Wawrinka (33) beat French qualifier Ugo Humbert 7:6 (7:5), 4:6, 6:3, 7:5 and will now face Milos Raonic (Canada/No. 25).

Wawrinka has also had an injury break for months. After cartilage damage, the three-time Grand Slam Champion is only at the US Open thanks to a wildcard.
