Jürgen Melzer and his partner Nikola Mektic have also survived the second round of the double competition at the US Open 2018. The Lower Austrian and his Croatian partner beat Joao Sousa and Leonardo Mayer in two sets.
Jürgen Melzer has taken revenge for fellow countryman and buddy Oliver Marach. The latter had lost surprisingly in three sets with partner Mate Pavic against Joao Sousa and Leonardo Mayer in the first round of the US Open, Melzer was not to blame with Nikola Mektic: 6:3, 6:3 the final score for the Austrian-Croatian pairing, which is already in the round of 16.
Melzer was also very satisfied after the game, especially with the serve performance of his team: “Sousa/Mayer did not manage a single break.
Actually, Mektic is on tour with Alexander Peya on the ATP tour, and highly successful. Peya, however, has to give up the US Open due to injury, he placed Melzer as a temp. On the one hand, he is a man who has already won two Grand Slams on the credit side. And also one who plays doubles on the advantage side, just like Alexander Peya. The basic requirement for Mektic to try it with the legendary left-hander.
In the match on Court 10, Melzer/Mektic missed break chances in the first game, but Sousa was the weakest link in the serve chain and gave up his service for 2:3. From then on, Melzer and Mektic played their game confidently, leaving the court after 71 minutes as winners.
In the round of 16, either Austin Krajicek and Tennys Sandgren or the seeded Horacio Zeballos and Julio Peralta will be waiting.
