US Open: Local heroes Mike Bryan and Jack Sock win double title

Number three seeded doubles Mike Bryan and Jack Sock have secured the title at the 2018 US Open. In the final, the two Americans Lukasz Kubot and Marcelo Melo defeated 6:3 and 6:1.

There were break points on both sides early in the double-final, but the serveers were able to pull themselves out of the affair and withstood the pressure.

At 3-2, Bryan/Sock made another break point and were unable to take their chances, but overall they seemed more dangerous on the pitch. 40-year-old Mike Bryan, who normally stands on the pitch alongside his twin brother Bob Bryan, repeatedly set accents with his strong backhand. Brother Bob has to pause due to a serious hip replacement.

The spectators at Arthur Ashe Stadium were treated to top-class and exciting double tennis. With two strong forehands, Sock and his partner secured the first break of the game after a service game by Kubot lasting over ten minutes.

It should have been the fifth set point for the purely American duo and Bryan/Sock took a 6:3 lead in the sets.

Sock – the youngest player on the pitch at 26 – was the dominant player on the pitch, securing Melo’s first service game for himself and Bryan with great forehand winners.

With the break in their backs, the reigning Wimbledon champions played free and did not let the great triumph at the USTA Billie Jean Tennis Center be taken away. In the meantime it was 14:0 for the Americans, who played themselves intoxicated and showed double tennis from the textbook.

With a clear and highly deserved 6:1 in the second round the local heroes crowned themselves the winner of the double competition

For Bryan, this is the 18th major double title of his career and Sock’s victory in NYC marks his third Grand Slam triumph. A few months ago, the winning duo triumphed at the tournament in Wimbledon.
