Serena Williams has reached the US Open final in New York for the ninth time and is only one win away from her 24th Grand Slam title.
The 36-year-old from the USA won 6-3, 6-0 against Anastasija Sevastova from Latvia after 66 minutes, “I had to get used to her game at the beginning, but then it worked out well,” said Serena Williams. In the final the superstar will meet her compatriot Madison Keys or Naomi Osaka from Japan on Saturday (22.00 CEST/Eurosport).
Already in Wimbledon in July Williams had the chance to set the record of the Australians Margaret Court, but lost in the final against Angelique Kerber (Kiel). Last year she skipped the tournament in Flushing Meadows, which she had already won six times, because of the birth of her daughter Olympia.
Williams started the first duel with Sevastova (28) with unusual mistakes. However, after the 0:2 she dominated the match at will. Sevastova, who had previously defeated defending champion Sloane Stephens (USA) and reached a Grand Slam semi-final for the first time, lacked the means to endanger Williams. This is Williams’ ninth final in the Big Apple.
Of 30 finals in Melbourne, Paris, Wimbledon and New York, Williams only lost seven. Twice against Kerber, twice against her sister Venus and once each against Samantha Stosur, Maria Sharapova and Garbine Muguruza. In Flushing Meadows she triumphed in 1999, 2002, 2008, 2012, 2013 and 2014.
