After Novak Djokovic reached the US Open final, he and Roger Federer will play in the ATP finals at the end of the year.
The two superstars are thus joined by Rafael Nadal, who qualified for the year-end tournament of the top eight players during the Rogers Cup in Toronto. The three most successful players of their generation will thus all be represented in London.
Novak Djokovic won against Kei Nishikori in the semi-final of the US Open for the eleventh time. The Serbian has already won the tournament five times – in 2008 he won in Shanghai, after which the 13-time Grand Slam Champion won the title on the Thames four times in a row from 2012 to 2015.
“I love to play there. I’ve had some memorable moments on this court,” says Djokovic. Last year, the sixth in the world rankings missed the tournament due to an injury.
Roger Federer will compete in the ATP finals for the 16th time. No other player has taken part in this prestigious event so often.
The Swiss qualified for the tournament at this early stage of the season thanks to the “Grand Slam Champion Rule”. This means that as a major winner – Federer is the title holder at the Australian Open – you only have to be among the top 20 in the “Race to London”. The 37-year-old will not drop out of these during the current season.
“I can hardly wait. London has always been great terrain for me,” says Federer. The most successful player of all time won the year-end tournament a total of six times – in 2010 and 2011 he was successful in the English capital.
The other five places are currently occupied by Alexander Zverev, Juan Martin del Potro, Marin Cilic, Kevin Anderson and Dominic Thiem. They are hunted by John Isner, Fabio Fognini and Kei Nishikori, among others. The tournament will take place from 11-18 November.
