Now it’s fixed: Angelique Kerber has qualified for the WTA Finals in Singapore. In the Porsche Race to Singapore she is second after Simona Halep.
Great news for Angie Kerber – even though she was denied the title at the US Open: The Wimbledon winner is now sure to be at the WTA finals in Singapore! Kerber currently ranks second in the annual ranking.
Halep leads with a relaxed 2,000 points, but Kerber has also secured her second place with almost 1,000 points ahead of Petra Kvitova. Kerber will play for her first title at the year-end event in 2018. She celebrated her best result in 2016 when she lost to Dominika Cibulkova in the final. “One of my goals for 2018 was to qualify for Singapore,” said the 30-year-old.
US Open winner Naomi Osaka, who has the best chance of taking part for the first time in the grand finale of the year from 21 to 28 October, has shot up to fourth place.
While Caroline Wozniacki, Elina Svitolina and Sloane Stephens are close together, eighth place is already highly competitive – because Serena Williams is also racing towards the top ten again. The former world number one has made up ten places in the Porsche Race to Singapore with her entry to the final in New York and is currently ranked 11th.
Julia Görges could not attack due to her early elimination in round two, for her it went from 11th to 14th place – but of course she still has good chances. Just like Garbine Muguruza, Caroline Garcia and Jelena Ostapenko, who were in Singapore last year and currently “only” occupy ranks 16 to 18. They also hope for a strong final spurt of the year!
Barbora Krejicova/Katerina Siniakova lead the double race ahead of New York finalists Kristina Mladenovic/Timea Babos. Among the top eight were CoCo Vandeweghe and Ashleigh Barty, who are currently seventh on their way to Singapore!
But if you don’t make it into the top eight in the end, you shouldn’t be too disappointed: Following the WTA Finals in Singapore, the WTA Elite Trophy will be held from 29 October to 3 November in Zhuhai, China, with twelve players: the top eleven players who did not qualify for Singapore, plus a wild card player. Last year Jule Görges qualified with a last-minute victory in Moscow – and crowned her strong year 2017 with the victory in Zhuhai!
