ATP: John McEnroe – Rod Laver is the Babe Ruth of tennis

John McEnroe is looking forward to the second edition of the Laver Cup in Chicago from September 21 to 23. And praises its namesake.

John McEnroe has rarely had a problem hitting the wall with this during and after his career. And since the talk of the day in the USA, as far as tennis is concerned, still revolves around Serena Williams and the US Open women’s final that got out of control, John McEnroe likes to remind us that the second edition of the Laver Cup is coming up in just over a week’s time. This time in Chicago.

A city with a great baseball tradition that did not take a turn for the better until 2016, when the Chicago Cubs won the World Series. George Herman “Babe” Ruth never played for the Cubs, but is still considered to be at least the best-known baseball player of all times. So when McEnroe Rod Laver compares to Babe Ruth, US sports fans know what’s going on.

In any case, McEnroe hopes that the event has a future. Due to the plans of the ITF to schedule the Davis Cup final as soon as possible after the US Open, this is in question. Which would be an injustice to the namesake.

“I hope that tennis recognizes, and Roger Federer in particular, that we should stand behind this because Rod Laver is the Babe Ruth in our sport,” McEnroe said at the US Open.

Well, there is certainly no lack of appreciation for Rod Laver from the Swiss Grand Champion, and Federer and his team are also very active in advertising. And the short-term planning also envisages a third edition of the Laver Cup, namely in Geneva in 2019.
