WTA: Petkovic last German in Guangzhou

Andrea Petkovic is the only German player to reach the quarter-finals of the WTA tournament in Guangzhou, China.

The 31-year-old from Darmstadt defeated local hero Wang Yafan 6:4, 7:6 (7:5) and will face Vera Lapko from Belarus in the last eight. Former Wimbledon finalist Sabine Lisicki had lost 3-6, 3-6 to Kazakh Yulia Putintseva.

Petkovic failed to qualify at the New Haven and Cincinnati tournaments in early August after reaching the semi-finals of the Washington tournament. At the US Open in New York she dropped out in the first round.

Lisicki had paused for three months after an injury in Miami in March and celebrated her first victory on the WTA Tour since February in her opening game against Russian wild card player Vera Zvonareva in Guangzhou. In the world rankings, the former number twelve has now slipped down to position 227.
