ATP: Stan Wawrinka can catch up with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga

Stan Wawrinka is working his way up to the top of the ATP world rankings step by step. The Swiss player is already in the quarter-finals in St. Petersburg.

One more victory – then Stan Wawrinka caught up with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the world ranking. A few months ago this may have been news with direct implications for the world’s best. In September 2018, however, the two veterans will return to the top of the ATP charts.

Tsonga have already dropped out in round one against Peter Gojowczyk in Metz, are 75th in the live rankings with 740 points, Wawrinka is waiting for the quarter-final winner in St. Petersburg between Guido Pella and defending champion Damir Dzumhur, could also reach 740 points when entering the semi-finals.

There’s no question that the three-time Major winner is on the upswing again: Wawrinka showed strong nerves against Karen Khachanov, winning 7:6 (10) and 7:6 (1). In the lower half of the tableau, the second seed Fabio Fognini lost to Martin Klizan, Dzumhur and Denis Shapovalov are the remaining seeders. The Canadian will play Matteo Berrettini on Thursday.

The quarter-final places in the upper section are virgin: tournament favourite Dominic Thiem and French Open semi-finalist Marco Cecchinato are only entering the action today.
