Italian Camila Giorgi has surprisingly won against Caroline Wozniacki at the premier event in Tokyo.
Giorgi won the Round of 16 against the Australian Open winner 6-2, 2-6, 6-4, her first victory over a top ten player since 2015 and her third against Wozniacki: Giorgi had caused a stir in the third round of the US Open in 2013 with her triumph over the Dane, but since then she has lagged somewhat behind expectations. The powerplayer is currently ranked 37th, her best ranking was 30th in 2015.
Wozniacki, on the other hand, continues to hit a small low: she has only won two matches since her victory in Eastbourne in June, but lost five. After her triumph in Melbourne, she has only reached one semi-final (in Doha) apart from Eastbourne.
Giorgi will face Victoria Azarenka in the final eight, who won 6-4, 6-2 against Ashleigh Barty. Donna Vekic also won today against Johanna Konta.
Already at noon Barbora Strycova and Anett Kontaveit played the most exciting match of the day, which the Czech won 7:6 (5), 3:6, 7:5 – with their eighth match point.
