Matthias Bachinger has reached the semi-finals of the ATP World Tour 250 tournament in Metz after winning three sets against Yannick Maden. There Bachinger will meet the tournament favourite Kei Nishikori.
Two Germans at prime time in Metz – but not the country’s best players, Alexander Zverev and Philipp Kohlschreiber, but Matthias Bachinger and Yannick Maden. Both had started in the qualification, Bachinger had earned himself a place in the main field. Maden lost his last competition, but then replaced Kohlschreiber, who cancelled at short notice.
And Maden won two more times in the quarter-finals, but that was the end of his Lucky Loose career. Matthias Bachinger won after 2:07 hours 6:3, 2:6 and 6:4 and will face Kei Nishikori on Saturday. The Japanese tournament favourite also needed three sets to beat Nikoloz Basilashvili.
The second semi-final will be played by Gilles Simon, who beat Richard Gasquet for the first time, and Rado Albot, who defeated Ricardas Berankis. Defending champion Peter Gojowczyk lost to Nishikori in round two.
