Team Europe enter the final day of the 2018 Laver Cup with a 7-5 lead, with John McEnroe’s team beaten back after Roger Federer and Alexander Zverev won their two singles.
You can count on Jack Sock, at least in doubles. With this insight John McEnroe can go home after day two at the Laver Cup in Chicago with some reassurance. However, the captain of Team World did not expect Kevin Anderson to defeat Novak Djokovic in a re-match of the 2018 Wimbledon final.
After Alexander Zverev and Roger Federer’s success, the decisive Sunday will come before them, on which every victory will be worth three points, at least 7-5 for the selection for captain Björn Borg.
Germany’s number one converted on the brink of defeat in the first match on Saturday and had to fend off a match point against John Isner in the tiebreak of the second set. Zverev won the match with a concentrated tiebreak.
Afterwards, Nick Kyrgios was on the verge of a nervous breakdown, Roger Federer at least had no problems with the Australian in 6:3 and 6:2. Even the support measures of Jack Sock, who did not quite know how to cope with the apparently difficult climatic conditions in the United Center, did not help: With a ski cap like in Zverev’s match – or just with a cap like in Anderson’s match.
The surprise of the day came from Kevin Anderson, who defeated Novak Djokovic 7:6 (5), 5:7 and 10:6. For both players it was their first ever single appearance at a Laver Cup, in doubles on Friday Anderson had defeated Djokovic and Federer alongside Sock.
The last match of the day was a clear matter for the hosts: Sock and Kyrgios did not spend long with Grigor Dimitrov and David Goffin, won 6:3 and 6:4 and Sock will also open day three: At the side of John Isner against Roger Federer and Alexander Zverev (from 8 pm in our LIVE-TICKER).
