WTA: Görges fights his way into the second round in Wuhan

Fed Cup player Julia Görges has reached the second round after an energy performance at the WTA tournament in Wuhan, China. The 29-year-old from Bad Oldesloe won her first round match against the Czech Marketa Vondrousova after 2:42 hours 6:3, 3:6, 7:6 (4).

Görges initially lost a serve in the third round, but fought his way back into the match. In the tie-break, her opponent’s elf in the world rankings immediately lost two serves and set the course for victory. She will face Hsieh Su-Wei (Taiwan) or qualifier Sofia Kenin (USA) in round two.

The third seed Angelique Kerber has a walk-through in the first round of the hard court tournament, which is endowed with the equivalent of 2.3 million euros (2.75 million US dollars). In the second round, the Kieler threatens a duel with the US open semi-finalist Madison Keys (USA).

Also in round two are Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who beat US Open semi-finalist Anastasija Sevastova 6-3 and 6-2, and the 2016 Olympic champion Monica Puig, who beat Kirsten Flipkens in three sets.
