The Davis Cup final between France and Croatia will take place on sand. This was announced by the French Tennis Federation on Monday.
It was already announced on Saturday that the final would once again take place in Lille. The semi-final against Spain was also played in the northern French city, but at that time on hard court.
As early as 2014, the French laid a sand layer in the Pierre Mauroy stadium – without success. Roger Federer and his team from Switzerland won the match 3:1.
Lille has been the venue for many French Davis Cup matches in recent years. Among other things, last year’s final against Belgium took place there. The host should also have good memories of the last home game on ashes in Lille: Serbia were defeated in the semi-finals in 2017.
Another reason for the choice of course was probably the hard court strength of the Croats around Marin Cilic. Borna Coric also achieved its best results on faster substrates.
The final will take place from 23 to 25 November. It will be the last encounter in the old Davis Cup mode.
