After Maria Sharapova, Serena Williams, another star player, has finished her tennis season 2018. The American withdrew her nomination for the WTA Mandatory Event in Beijing.

The now legendary final of the US Open 2018 will be the last match of Serena Williams in the current tennis year. The 23-time major winner announced that she will not participate in the WTA Mandatory Tournament in Beijing. A start at the WTA Finals in Singapore is also out of reach.

Williams had returned to the WTA Tour in Indian Wells after the birth of her daughter Olympia and was defeated by her sister Venus in the third round. The 2018 tournament victory was not enough, but the final appearances in Wimbledon (defeat against Angelique Kerber) and in New York, where Serena Naomi lost to Osaka, catapulted the 36-year-old back to 16th place in the WTA rankings.

Serena played a total of 24 matches in the current tennis year, of which she won 18.
