ATP: Fognini convinces with opening success in Chengdu

Fabio Fognini starts convincingly into the 250cc tournament in Chengdu. He defeats the Belgian Ruben Bemelmans 6:4 and 7:6 (2).

It was not until the second set that Bemelmans challenged the Italian somewhat. After Fognini hadn’t allowed a single break chance in the first set, the Belgian could break his opponent’s serve once in the second section and send the set into a tiebreak. But there, the top seeded player made short work of it and confidently fixed his entry into the quarter finals.

There it goes for the Italian against Matthew Ebden. The Australian beat Fognini’s compatriot Matteo Berrettini in the tiebreak of the third set.

There was a little surprise in the match between Sam Querrey and Nikoloz Basilashvili. The Georgian with his strong form had no chance at all against the US-American and lost smoothly in two sets. He’s going to face Taylor Fritz in the final eight.

In the lower half, Joao Sousa, Malek Jaziri, Bernard Tomic and Felix Auger-Aliassime had already prevailed on Wednesday. For all eight remaining players in China, 250 world ranking points and 190,885 US dollars are at stake.
