The USTA has to search for a new Davis Cup captain. Jim Courier resigned after losing to Croatia in the semi-finals in Zadar.
When the new era of the Davis Cup begins, the USA will also have to prepare for a new Davis Cup boss: Jim Courier, who was captain of the Stars and Stripes for eight years, will no longer be available in 2019. The semi-final in Croatia, which was only decided in favour of the hosts in the last match by Borna Coric’s success against Frances Tiafoe, was therefore the last under Courier’s aegis.
“After the matches in Croatia, I let the players and staff know that this was my last year as captain of the US Davis Cup team,” Courier said in a statement.
By participating in the preliminary round, John Isner’s team now has more than a year break – the four best teams of this year, besides the USA the two finalists France and Croatia, plus Spain, are set for the final tournament 2019 in the Caja Magical in Madrid.
“It was an honor and a privilege to represent the USA and the USTA,” Courier continued. In the future, of course, he will keep his fingers crossed for the team.
