WTA: Mona Barthel loses semi-final in Tashkent

Mona Barthel (Neumünster) was eliminated in the semi-finals of the WTA tournament in Tashkent. The 28-year-old lost 6-4, 1-6, 5-7 to Margarita Gasparian of Russia, and Barthel reached the semi-finals of a WTA tournament in the Uzbek capital for the second time this year.

“It feels great to get good results again after six difficult months,” said Barthel after her quarter-final win over number two seeded Belarusian Vera Lapko: “It went up and down a lot, but in the past weeks I’ve shown some good matches and feel better.

Against Gasparian, Barthel had a good chance to enter the Tashkent final, but missed the opportunity to break 6-5. After almost two hours the German lost her serve, Gasparyan celebrated her entry into the final, where she will meet her young compatriot Anastasia Potapova. Potapova had entered the main field as a qualifier – and had no problems in her semi-final 6:2 and 6:3 against Kateryna Kozlova.
