WTA: One year after career end: Martina Hingis announces pregnancy

Around a year after her career ended, Swiss tennis icon Martina Hingis announced her pregnancy on Twitter on her 38th birthday.

On Sunday Hingis twittered: “Thank you for all your birthday wishes. I am happy to announce that this will be the last time we celebrate as a couple. I am excited to announce that we will become a family with three members!” Among them, the five-time Grand Slam winner took a photo of a pink US Open romper and an XXS racquet.

In mid-July, Hingis married Harald Leemann, an orthopaedist one year older, in Bad Ragaz. “We wish for children, yes. But that’s not possible at the push of a button,” the former number one of Swiss magazines had already revealed.

This is Hingis’ second marriage: from 2010 to 2013 she was married to the French show jumper Thibault Hutin.

She had met Leemann in 2016 in the Swiss Fed Cup team, for which he worked as a team doctor.

Hingis had ended her career last fall. For 209 weeks she was at the top of the WTA ranking. The “Swiss Miss” had won five Grand Slam titles in the singles, 13 in the doubles and 7 in the mixed major trophies.

Despite her pregnancy, Hingis is expected to take part in the Legends Cup on Mallorca next week, according to the newspaper Blick. She is also a consultant to the Swiss Fed Cup team.
