WTA: Beijing: Kerber in the round of sixteen, Osaka merciless

Wimbledon winner Angelique Kerber (Kiel) has reached the round of sixteen at the WTA tournament in Beijing. Against the Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro, the third in the world rankings won after problems in the first set with 7:6 (7:4), 6:1.

In her tenth match against Navarro, the three-time Grand Slam winner scored her seventh success after 1:21 hours of play. In the round of the last 16, Kerber now faces the winner of the duel between Timea Babos (Hungary) and Zhang Shuai (China).

Sloane Stephens, Dominika Cibulkova and Kiki Bertens had already successfully completed their second round match, US Open winner Naomi Osaka is also 6:1, 6:0 over Danielle Collins in the round of the last 16 players.

Previously, Laura Siegemund (Metzingen) had been eliminated in the second round on Tuesday. The 30-year-old lost to Estonian Anett Kontaveit 6-2, 3-6, 2-6 after a tough fight, and on Monday Wimbledon semi-finalist Julia Görges (Bad Oldesloe) reached the round of 16. There she meets Osaka. Andrea Petkovic from Darmstadt was defeated at the beginning by Lesia Tsurenko from Ukraine. The number 1 in the world, Simona Halep, had had to give up her first round match due to a back injury.
