ATP: Tokyo: Shapovalov defeats Wawrinka and follows Nishikori and Raonic

Denis Shapovalov has reached the quarter-finals of the 500cc tournament in Tokyo thanks to a 4.6, 6:1, 6:4 victory over Stan Wawrinka.

In an up-and-down match, the 19-year-old won after almost two hours of playing time. Wawrinka was able to convert a 0:40 score into a game win at 2:2, the Canadian managed the decisive break to 4:3. Wawrinka then fended off three match points on his own serve, but Shapovalov then served them away. He now plays against Jan-Lennard Struff or Jeremy Chardy – the two meet on Thursday at 5am CEST.

Also in the quarter-finals are seeded Kei Nishikori (6-3, 7-5 against Benoit Paire), number six of the tournament, Milos Raonic (6-3, 7-6 (2) against Yosuke Watanuki), and Daniil Medvedev (6-4, 6-3 against Martin Klizan).

The two seeded Kevin Anderson, Nick Kyrgios and Alex de Minaur were still busy with round one on Wednesday – all successful.
