ATP: Jan-Lennard Struff reaches Tokyo quarter finals

Davis Cup player Jan-Lennard Struff has reached the quarter-finals at the ATP tournament in Tokyo.

The 28-year-old from Warstein defeated the Frenchman Jeremy Chardy in the round of sixteen in 2:19 hours with 7:6 (7:3), 6:7 (2:7), 6:4 and will meet the Canadian super talent Denis Shapovalov in the round of eight. Struff managed 17 aces, among others, and was able to fend off all three break chances of his opponent.

At the beginning Struff surprisingly defeated the top seeded Australian Open finalist Marin Cilic (Croatia). Struff is the last remaining German player in the 1.68 million euro (1.93 million US dollars) hard court tournament.

French Open finalist Maximilian Marterer (Nuremberg) had failed at his opening hurdle Frances Tiafoe (USA).
