ATP: Federer manager Godsick – “Roger himself doesn’t know how long he’ll play”

Tony Godsick is not only Roger Federer’s manager, but also one of the driving forces behind the Laver Cup, alongside the Swiss Maestro. The event is scheduled to take place in Geneva next year.

Basically there is a ranking for everything from the US magazine FORBES Magazine. The only requirement is that the subject matter of the charts must be pecuniary in nature. So it’s no wonder that FORBES has also put the revenues of the sports agents on an attractive list. The only tennis man in the top 50: Tony Godsick, manager of Roger Federer and Juan Martin del Potro.

In the box of his protégé Federer you can see Godsick in almost every match, but as far as interviews are concerned the US-American is rather rare. The Swiss daily newspaper BLICK has now been able to hold a detailed discussion with Godsick, who is also significantly involved in the organisation of the Laver Cup.

Here are some excerpts from the interview. Tony Godsick about …

… the Laver Cup 2019, which will be held in Geneva:

“In Prague and Chicago, we had to live with what they gave us. Next year we’ll organize as we like – without borders. We want a global tennis festival with even greater TV coverage and expect around 20,000 fans a day. With the exclusive live pictures from the dressing rooms, people see the stars like never before.”

… about possible date collisions with the final tournament of the new Davis Cup format:

“Gerard Piqué, the organizer and investor, told me that the final week of the Davis Cup will take place the next five to ten years in November. We’re sticking to our date.”

… about Roger Federer’s career prospects:

“He himself doesn’t know when to stop. For me this is sometimes frustrating, because I am an organized person and like to plan in advance. Roger assured me that he would play the Laver Cup in Geneva.”
