ATP: Match point awarded – Jan-Lennard Struff defeats Denis Shapovalov in Tokyo

Jan-Lennard Struff was eliminated from the ATP World Tour 500 tournament in Tokyo. The German Davis Cup player lost to Denis Shapovalov in three sets.

The chance was there for Jan-Lennard Struff in the match against the Canadian Denis Shapovalov. After the Warsteiner had won the first set of the quarter-finals at the ATP World Tour 500 tournament, Struff played a match point in the tiebreak of the second set, but could not use it.

Shapovalov came back, won 4:6, 7:6 (7) and 6:4 and will face either Milos Raonic or Daniil Medvedev in the semi-final on Saturday.

Struff had bowled out of the table right at the beginning of the event in Tokyo tournament favourite Marin Cilic, defeated Jeremy Chardy from France in round two. Shapovalov beat Stan Wawrinka in three sets in the round of sixteen.

After losing run two, Struff was behind in the early decision with a break. Shapovalov used the advantage, gave himself up to the end no more nakedness. After 2:21 hours the left-hander went off the court as the winner.

In the doubles, Struff has another chance on Friday: local hero Ben McLachlan will play against the Dutch pairing Matwe Middelkoop and Robin Haase for a place in the final.
