ATP: Medvedev wins in Tokyo

Daniil Medvedev wins the 500cc tournament in Tokyo. In the final he defeated the Japanese Kei Nishikori in two sets.

The Russian qualifier beat the local hero 6:2 and 6:4. Nishikori, who had played a strong game against Richard Gasquet the day before, never found his way to his game and had to leave the field as the loser after just over an hour.

Especially in the first round, the 22-year-old played his Asian opponent partially against the wall. With six aces and his strong baseline play, Medvedev dominated almost at will.

In the second set, Nishikori was at least able to hold his serve and made the encounter halfway open. At 5-4, however, the qualifier started for the final attack, Nishikori took off his serve and crowned himself tournament winner in Tokyo.

Nishikori’s hopes of participating in the ATP World Tour Finals have been dampened by his defeat in the finals. A good 700 points are missing for the coveted eighth place. Both players will continue next week in Shanghai.
