ATP: Outsider Basilashvili triumphs after victory over del Potro in Beijing

Nikoloz Basilashvili surprisingly defeated the clear favourite Juan Martin del Potro (Argentina) at the ATP tournament in Beijing and celebrated his second tournament victory on the professional tour.

The 26-year-old Georgian won the final against the top-seeded US Open finalist 6:4, 6:4 and received prize money of 733,320 dollars (around 636,000 euros).

After almost 1:40 hours, Basilashvili turned his third match point against a stricken “Delpo”, who could not use any of his seven break chances. In July Basilashvili, number 34 in the ATP ranking, had triumphed at the tournament in Hamburg.

For both players, the Masters Tournament in Shanghai continues directly. While del Potro (30), number three on the seed list, will benefit from a walk-through in the first round, Basilashvili will have to play Canadian Denis Shapovalov.

The winner of this game will face Alexander Zverev from Hamburg in the second round.
