ATP Rankings: Basilashvili pushes ahead, Thiem and Struff need points

The battle for places in the ATP finals in London is coming to a head. In the current week up to 1000 points will be played for the tournament winner in Shanghai.

The big winners of last week’s ATP World Tour 500 tournaments, Daniil Medvdev and Nikoloz Basilashvili, are also the players who have made the biggest leap within the top 50 in the ATP World Ranking: Medvedev, surprisingly successful in Tokyo against Kei Nishikori, lies on current position. Basilashvili defeated Juan Martin del Potro in Beijing, the Georgian has joined the ranks directly behind Medvedev.

There were no changes at the top before the start of the penultimate ATP Masters 1000 tournament of the year in Shanghai: Rafael Nadal leads ahead of Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic. Federer has in Shanghai 1000 points to defend, Djokovic not played last year. So it’s quite possible that the two will switch places. Nadal’s still pausing.

Alexander Zverev remains fifth in the rankings, followed by Dominic Thiem in seventh.

In the Race to London Kevin Anderson overtook Thiem, the Austrian ranks ejector seat eight at the beginning of this week. But he has a lead of almost 600 points over John Isner, who, unlike Thiem, will not be competing in Shanghai. Kei Nishikori, who is only just behind Isner in the annual ranking, also has the chance of being an outsider in London.

In the Doubles Race Jan-Lennard Struff and Ben McLachlan once again smelled fuse: After the triumph in Tokyo, the German-Japanese duo is in eleventh place. After Bob Bryan will not go to London, in practice even on position ten.
