Borna Coric beat Stan Wawrinka in the first round of the Masters 1000 tournament in Shanghai. Milos Raonic and Nick Kyrgios have also been eliminated.
In the match of the day, the 21-year-old Croatian could hold his own against wildcard holder Wawrinka in three sets. Coric lost the first run 4:6, but won the following two sets 6:4 and 6:3. In the next round, the nineteenth in the world rankings will meet Bradley Klahn somewhat surprisingly.
The American won against Nick Kyrgios 4:6, 6:4 and 6:3. The Australian, who had already shown curious performances against Mischa Zverev and Steve Johnson in the Chinese metropolis in the past years, acted again listlessly and had to leave the field after less than 80 minutes playing time as a loser.
Before Kyrgios, the Canadian Milos Raonic also had to admit defeat on Show Court 3. The monster serve, who was the clear favourite in the match against Mackenzie McDonald (USA) due to the speed of the pitch and was Roger Federer’s potential third-round opponent, lost in three sets.
The Argentinian Diego Schwartzman was another seed on the second day of the tournament. The 26-year-old clearly lost out to Sam Querrey. Stefanos Tsitsipas and Marco Cecchinato on the other hand made it into the second round.
