WTA: German duel in Linz: Julia Görges plays against Andrea Petkovic

Top seeded Julia Görges will meet her Fed Cup colleague Andrea Petkovic in the first round of the WTA tournament in Linz. Thanks to a wildcard, the girl from Darmstadt had moved into the main draw.

The duel had already taken place four times – Görges won twice and Petkovic twice. At the last meeting of the two so far in the semi-finals of Washington 2017, “Jule” was just 5:7, 6:4, 7:5 ahead. Another Fed Cup colleague could then wait for the winner in the next round (round of sixteen). For this to happen, Tatjana Maria has to win her Aufrakt game against a qualifier.

This was the result of the draw on Sunday in the district heating power plant of LINZ AG. Rio Olympic champion Monica Puig, Kristina Mladenovic and Magdalena Rybarikova were the lucky fairies alongside ex-professional Barbara Schett.

“This is the most interesting draw I’ve ever been to,” said Mladenovic upon her arrival at the control center. The French girl, friend of the Austrian Dominic Thiem, was also drawn into the upper half of the tableau and could meet Görges, Petkovic or Maria in the quarter finals of the “Upper Austria Ladies Linz”.

The second seeded Kiki Bertens, who is still fighting for important points for a possible participation in the WTA final in Singapore (from 21 October), will face the Austrian wildcard holder Barbara Haas in the first round.

Carina Witthöft, Mona Barthel, Antonia Lottner and Tamara Korpatsch, among others, failed to qualify for the 250,000 euro indoor event. The defending champion in Linz is Czech Barbora Strycova (No. 3), who will play Kirsten Flipkens (Belgium) in the opening match.
