Peter Gojowczyk has reached the round of sixteen of the ATP Masters in Shanghai after a tennis thriller. The 29-year-old defeated the Hungarian Marton Fucsovics after 2:38 hours with 6:4, 6:7 (3:7), 7:6 (7:5). The Munich player caught up 1:4 in the tiebreak of the third set.
Gojowczyk had lost to Fucsovics in the Geneva final in May and missed his second title at the ATP tournament. In the round of 16 he will now face the Australian Matthew Ebden, who kicked Dominic Thiem (Austria/Nr. 6) out of the race. Ebden needed at 6:4, 6:7 (8:10), 7:6 (7:4) even 2:45 hours.
Meanwhile, Germany’s top player Alexander Zverev (Hamburg/No. 4) will face a high hurdle in the second round on Wednesday. His opponent is the Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili, who defeated the US Open finalist Juan Martin del Potro (Argentina) in the final of the China Open in Beijing on Sunday and advanced to 23rd place in the world rankings.
Mischa Zverev from Hamburg and Maximilian Marterer from Nuremberg had failed in the first round of the 9.2 million dollar competition. For both it was the fifth first-round finish in a row.
