ATP: Shanghai: Dominic Thiem out after roller coaster ride, Djokovic is further on

Dominic Thiem missed the first round of sixteen at the Masters 1000cc tournament in Shanghai: The seventh in the world ranking was defeated by the Australian Matthew Ebden with 4:6, 7:6 (8), 6:7 (4).

Thiem started the first match of the two directly with a break, but gave up his service immediately. At 4:5 he did not use a 40:15, Ebden won the set.

Lichtenwörther had only served 39 percent of his first serve in the first set, a number he increased to just over 50 percent in the second set. Again it was Thiem who managed the first break – after that he held his serve to 3:1, but had to accept the 3:3 equalization.

The tiebreak was then an up and down: Thiem first gave a 3:1 advantage, but then played a set ball determinedly, which Ebden defended with a strong net action. But Thiem stayed on despite three set balls – number four finally sat.

Both players served the deciding set mostly sovereign through. Thiem only had to fend off three break points at 2:2, before everything again pointed to a tiebreak decision. At 5-5, however, Thiem made too many easy mistakes and had to accept the first break of the run. But the “Dominator” didn’t get his hands on it and used breakchance number three against the constantly advancing Australian to 6:6. There, however, the World Rankings-51 took the lead quickly with 3:0 and 5:2, but Thiem didn’t have enough for another Houdini trick.

Thiem is therefore still waiting for his first round of the last sixteen in Shanghai: last year he had failed at the start due to Viktor Troicki, in 2016 he did not compete because of a feverish cold. In 2014 and 2015 he won round one, but was kicked out of the match afterwards.

In the doubles Thiem is still at the start, he was already successful there on Monday for the first time. Ebden will now face Peter Gojowczyk in the individual competition, who defeated Marton Fucsovics 6:4, 6:7 (3), 7:6 (5).

Meanwhile, third in the world rankings Novak Djokovic has made it into the round of the last 16: The Wimbledon and US Open-Champ defeated Jeremy Chardy from France 6:3, 7:5.
