Andrea Petkovic has reached the second round at the WTA tournament in Linz. In the duel with her compatriot Julia Görges, the 31-year-old won after a hard fight with 1:6, 7:5, 6:4.
The number one of the tournament Görges started furiously into the game and took eight of the first ten points. In the first set, she lost just a single rally on her own serve.
In the second run the same picture emerged: Görges dominated the service and put her opponent under pressure with her returns. But out of nowhere Petkovic made a brilliant comeback at 2:4, defended a match point at 4:5 and took the set 7:5.
“Jule played incredibly well, I couldn’t really do much for it,” said Petkovic about the modest beginning. The break to 4:3 was decisive, when I believed for the first time that I could still win this match.”
Petkovic lost a break to 2:1 in the third set, but another break to 5:4 was decisive in the end. In the fifth duel with Görges Petkovic was the winner for the third time. It was her second win over a top 10 player in the last two years. In round two, six-time WTA title holder Tatjana Maria will once again play a DTB player.
