WTA: Moscow: New setback for Lisicki – Siegemund also loses in the qualifying round

Sabine Lisicki has suffered another setback. Also Laura Siegemund had to admit defeat in the qualification of the WTA-Premier-Tournament in Moscow.

Week after week Lisicki is hoping for it. On a series, a run that could catapult them back to – let’s say – the quarter-finals at a WTA tournament. Unfortunately, however, everyday life looks quite different for the 29-year-old, who also had to pack her bags early at the Kremlin Cup in Moscow.

Lisicki lost in the first round of qualifying with 6:3, 5:7, 6:7 (4:7) against Vlada Koval from Russia, who was only 17 years old. The 585th in the world rankings had never played a match on the WTA Tour before.

For Lisicki, number 212 in the ranking, it was another setback on the long road back to old strength. The former Wimbledon finalist, who suffered her 13th defeat in the 19th match of the year, made twelve double faults (in five aces).

In a recent interview with Bild am Sonntag, the native of Troisdorf said, among other things, that her career was currently a grant business. This year it has so far earned a total of around 47,500 dollars (a total of around 7.02 million dollars).

“I’m currently going into the red every week. I’ve hardly ever played this year. And if they did, the results weren’t good, so there wasn’t much prize money either,” Lisicki had explained. . Her goal is “to play qualifier for the Australian Open in January.”

Laura Siegemund also missed the jump into the main draw in Russia. The Swabian lost on Sunday in the penultimate qualifying round to the Serbian Ivana Jorovic with 2:6, 4:6. On Saturday Anna Zaja also failed with 6:4, 6:7 (5:7), 2:6 against the Spanish Silvia Soler-Espinosa.

In the Russian capital, Romanian Simona Halep, who was diagnosed with a slipped disc only two weeks ago, is in first place.
