Vera Zvonareva provided the surprise at the WTA tournament in Moscow and defeated two seeded Karolina Pliskova. So one place in Singapore goes to Elina Svitolina, the other one is still open.

Zvonareva, a former finalist in Wimbledon and New York, was the biggest win since her comeback after a long break due to injuries and pregnancy. 6:1, 6:2 it was after 1 hour and 10 minutes playing time – and a strong performance of the 34-year-old ex number 2.

Elina Svitolina is the seventh player to play at the WTA Finals in Singapore – after Simona Halep, Angie Kerber, Naomi Osaka, Petra Kvitova, Caroline Wozniacki and Sloane Stephens. Kiki Bertens now has the last place in her hand: If she reaches at least the semi-finals in Moscow, she will also be there – otherwise Pliskova.

There was another surprise before, because Sloane Stephens, who was on three points, also had to cancel the sails in Moscow: She lost to qualifier Ons Jabeur with 3:6, 2:6.
