ATP: Next premiere! Kyle Edmund fights Gael Monfils down in Antwerp

After the victory of Stefanos Tsitsipas in Stockholm Kyle Edmund also won his first title on the ATP World Tour!

Edmund won a competitive final with 3:6, 7:6 (2), 7:6 (4) over the Frenchman, who reached his second final of the year after Doha. Edmund, currently ranked 15th in the world, was in Marrakech in April for the only time in the final of an ATP event. With strong performances in Vienna and Paris he can hope for the last place at the ATP Finals.

“I’m just happy, it was such hard work,” Edmund said in tears after his victory. “It’s very special, Gael made me work hard for it – my congratulations to him, too.” Edmund managed the semi-decided mini-break at the end to 4:3, the last two points and the match win he took with courageous tennis.

Even for Monfils, who was injured again and again, the final participation was a success after a mixed 2018. The former sixth in the world rankings will be 33rd on Monday, the highest level in a year.
